Washington Commanders at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 1 game

September 4, 2024

play

The Washington Commanders (0-0) will face a tough test in Week 1 when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-0).

After years of inconsistent quarterback play, Washington got Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, hoping he is the answer to a franchise under new ownership. The Commanders have given him some weapons, indicating the team is ready to turn the page and get out of the NFC cellar.

Baker Mayfield has finally found a home after a successful first season in Tampa Bay led to a NFC divisional round playoff appearance. The Atlanta Falcons have loaded up to put up a fight for the NFC South, but the Buccaneers will attempt to retain the throne for a fourth-straight season.

Lorenzo Reyes: Buccaneers 26, Commanders 16

Jayden Daniels may end up becoming a star, but I think his entry into the NFL is going to be a bit rough. The Washington offensive line still has massive holes and Daniels will need to learn how to protect himself. On the other side, Bucs coach Todd Bowles has had incredible success defending against younger, inexperienced passers. I really like Tampa Bay in this spot.

Tyler Dragon: Buccaneers 21, Commanders 20

Rookie Jayden Daniels is set to make his first start in what is a new era for the Commanders. The Bucs will to make Daniels uncomfortable in his debut. Home cooking, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin should be enough to lift the Bucs over Washington.

Safid Deen: Buccaneers 24, Commanders 20

Jayden Daniels’ debut will be intriguing, and he’ll show some flashes the Commanders can use as fuel for a turnaround season. But the Buccaneers begin this season with a win at home behind their core of Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Rachaad White.

Richard Morin: Buccaneers 25, Commanders 17

I’m hesitant to believe the Jayden Daniels hype, at least right now. I think he’ll have trouble in his debut while Tampa Bay thrives in the afternoon heat.

Jordan Mendoza: Buccaneers 30, Commanders 21

Jayden Daniels will likely dazzle in his debut and give Washington a shot at winning. But it won’t matter if the Commanders defense doesn’t improve, as it ranked dead last in passing defense last season. With a new contract, Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans roll to a victory.
