Reigning world 100 meters champion Noah Lyles claimed a measure of redemption by winning the 100-metre event at the US athletics trials on Sunday, booking his ticket to the Paris Olympics.
Three years after failing to reach the Tokyo Olympics in the 100m over a trials finals flop, Lyles won in a personal best 9.83 seconds at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
It’s a redemption run for Lyles, who failed to qualify for the 100m final at the Tokyo Olympics and settled for bronze in a 200-metre final where he was a favorite. 26-year-old Lyles has said he struggled with depression in the run-up to the Tokyo Olympics.
Lyles was a champion in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at last year’s World Championships. He hopes to chase a fourth gold in Paris in the 4x400m relay, although it’s not clear he will be named to that pool. Lyles broke the American record of 19.32 seconds, which was set by Michael Johnson in the 1996 Olympics. Lyles holds personal best of 19.31 seconds for 200-metre event.
Last year, Noah Lyles boasted that he would certainly break Usain Bolt’s record. Jamaica’s Bolt set his 100m record in Berlin in 2009. American Tyson Gay is the second quickest after Bolt with a time of 9.69 set in Shanghai the same year. Bolt also holds the record of 19.19 seconds for 200-metre.Bolt is considered the greatest sprinter of all time, having won an unprecedented treble of consecutive Olympic golds in the 100m and 200m in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He also was part of the winning Jamaican 4×100 relay team in 2012 and 2016. Bolt currently holds eight Olympic golds as he returned one of his nine Olympic gold medals after relay team mate Nesta Carter was found guilty of doping at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
