The final tennis grand slam of 2024 is upon us, and as the home crowd’s spotlight shines down on the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre, one of the best players to come out of America since the eras of King and the Williams sisters is going for a second US Open title in a row.
Coco Gauff is the defending champion at Flushing Meadows having beaten Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 in last year’s decider, and ahead of the 2024 tournament, is one of several American players hoping to make a big impact at the US Open, with five seeded within the top 14 coming into the women’s competition in Queens.
Gauff is seeded third behind world number one Iga Swiatek and last year’s defeated finalist Sabalenka coming into this year’s US Open, with the 20-year-old having reached the Australian Open semifinals in her best performance of 2024 so far.
Jessica Pegula isn’t far behind Gauff in the rankings and is seeded sixth ahead of the women’s competition, while Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro and Madison Keys are the 11th, 13th and 14th seeds respectively. Gauff’s title defence begins with a first-round tie against France’s Varvara Gracheva, with 18 other US players also qualifying for the first stage.
