US Open women’s singles seeds confirmed: Iga Swiatek top, Aryna Sabalenka edges out Coco Gauff

August 21, 2024

Aryna Sabalenka will be seeded above Coco Gauff at the 2024 US Open, while Iga Swiatek will be the top seed for the 11th Grand Slam tournament in a row.

Swiatek, a five-time major winner, maintains a significant lead at the top of the WTA Rankings and has been the No 1 seed at every Grand Slam since the 2022 French Open.

Gauff was seeded second at a major for the first time in her career at Wimbledon last month, but she will be the No 3 seed for her US Open title defence.

The American lost the world No 2 position to Sabalenka after the Cincinnati WTA 1000 event, where the Belarusian star secured the title. Gauff was the defending champion in Cincinnati but lost her opening match this year.

Swiatek and Sabalenka can, therefore, not meet until the US Open final, while Gauff could land on either side of the draw.

Emma Raducanu’s unusual US Open preparation could be a blessing in disguise, says former British No 1

Elena Rybakina will be the No 4 seed for the third consecutive Grand Slam, while Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula, Zheng Qinwen and Barbora Krejcikova complete the top eight.

There will be seven seeded players from Russia in the women’s singles draw, which is more than any other nation. Daria Kasatkina, Anna Kalinskaya, Liudmila Samsonova, Daria Shnaider, Mirra Andreeva, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Ekaterina Alexandrova are all in the top 32.

The United States have five women’s players who will be seeded at Flushing Meadows, all of whom are ranked in the top 15: Gauff, Pegula, Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro and Madison Keys.

Marketa Vondrousova would have been seeded, but the world No 22 has withdrawn due to a hand injury. The 25-year-old Czech’s place in the draw has been taken by Petra Martic.

Sorana Cirstea and Zhu Lin are the only other players who have pulled out of the women’s singles event, but neither would have been seeded.
