Taylor Fritz will try to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since 2003 in Sunday’s US Open final.

Fritz won a five-set battle with fellow American Frances Tiafoe on Friday night to set up a championship match against top seed Jannik Sinner.

The 12th-seeded American will be a decided underdog on Sunday afternoon inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, but he does have the best form of his life and the crowd behind him.

Sinner will try to wrap up the $3.6 million winner’s purse on Sunday to complete the hard court sweep in 2024. He won his first major title at the Australian Open to start the season.

Fritz comes into Sunday’s final in the form of his life.

The 26-year-old American battled through a four-set quarterfinal to beat Alexander Zverev and went through a grueling five-setter against Tiafoe in the semifinal.

Fritz never made it past the quarterfinal at any major prior to his trip to New York this year.

He will try to become the first American man to win a major since Andy Roddick triumphed in New York In 2003.

A win would also make Fritz the second first-time major winner in 2024. That is a feat that has been rarely achieved in the last two decades with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the top of the sport.

Sinner is looking to finish off an incredible season that began with his first major victory at the Australian Open.

The top-seeded Italian comes into Sunday on far more rest because he played the first semifinal on Friday night and he was only on the court for three sets against Jack Draper.

Sinner has only lost two sets over the last two weeks in New York and one of them was to former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.

Neither player holds a significant edge in the head-to-head matchup, They split two matches on the Indian Wells hard court in 2021 and 2023.

Sinner will be the favorite, and most people expect him to win, but Fritz has a chance if he plays a perfect match and gets the crowd behind him early.

Prediction: Sinner beats Fritz 3 sets to 1.
