The Miami Dolphins dropped to 2-4 on Sunday with a 16-10 road loss to the Indianapolis Colts. It was the fourth full game the team played without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who suffered a concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills and was placed on injured reserve.

After four games off, Tagovailoa is set to practice this week following injured reserve requirements. The Dolphins gave their franchise quarterback a four-year, $212.4 million extension this offseason and could use him back in the starting lineup. They’re averaging just 10 points per game without him under center.

Miami coach Mike McDaniel spoke at a news conference today. Here’s what he said on his status for Week 8.

Tua Tagovailoa injury update

McDaniel said that Tagovailoa will be back in practice this week but did not confirm whether he will play in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

“Our plan is to start him practicing on Wednesday, and the clearing doesn’t come until after some of the activity,” he said. “But we’re obviously doing so in the hope of everything going well so he can play Sunday, but that will be to be determined.”

McDaniel explained that Tagovailoa’s potential return is in line with what medical experts have “deemed safe” for him to come back.

“You lean on experts for matters of the career, and that’s what we’re doing here,” McDaniel said, confirming that expert opinion played a role in putting Tagovailoa on injured reserve in the first place.

Quarterback Tyler Huntley suffered a shoulder injury in the loss to the Colts. McDaniel said the backup quarterback for Week 8 – should Tagovailoa start – is not set yet.

“To be determined,” he said. “Information still needs to be gathered… there’s still stuff that needs to go on with the evaluation process, and I’ll make my determination on that alongside the coaching staff.”

When was Tagovailoa injured?

The Dolphins’ 26-year-old quarterback suffered a concussion on Sept. 12. It happened during the third quarter of that week’s “Thursday Night Football” game between the Dolphins and the Bills.

Huntley and Skylar Thompson have started in his place. Huntley is 1-2 as a starter, and Thompson lost his lone start in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Dolphins’ record without Tagovailoa

Since Tagovailoa went down in Week 2, Miami is 1-3. The lone win came in Week 5 against the New England Patriots.

Tagovailoa’s missed 13 games since becoming Miami’s starting quarterback in Week 8 of the 2020 NFL season. The Dolphins are 4-9 in those games.

Tua Tagovailoa stats

Tagovailoa has completed 40 of 62 pass attempts for 483 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in two games this season. He also has three carries for 28 yards rushing.

Last season, Tagovailoa led the league with a career-best 4,624 passing yards and made his first Pro Bowl.
