Team USA women’s basketball blasted Germany on Sunday by a score of 87-68. With that, the Americans won Group C and secured one of the top two seeds in Olympic women’s basketball.
Germany came out strong early in the game, holding a lead after the first quarter. However, after that, Team USA started to lean on the gas in what was a physical game. That included an excellent defensive effort in the second quarter where they only allowed 10 points. From there, the Americans took control of the game.
A key reason why the Americans were able to take over was the bench. Team USA had 52 bench points compared to only 13 for Germany, which as Alyssa Thomas explained following the game, was a strength they knew they could lean on.
“We knew we had a lot of depth,” Thomas said. “I mean, we play against each other all year round in the WNBA in the W. Didn’t have the greatest start today but that’s the luxury we have with this team.”
With that, the American women have 58 straight wins. Team USA will next be back in action on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
This is the first Olympics that Thomas has been able to participate in, which she finds super exciting having grown up watching them and watching legends in all the different sports at the games.
“It’s exciting,” Thomas said. “I grew up watching the Olympics. Now, I’m here with the best athletes in the world and just trying to soak it in as best as I can… Michael Phelps. How can you not? Everybody really. It’s just a lot of fun to watch and support and now to be a part of these is super special.”
The Americans came into the day tied with Germany at the top of Group C, having already beaten Japan and Belgium in preliminary play. Now, the only question comes down to whether the Americans earn the first or second seed overall. That will come down to how France performs against Australia later on Sunday.
After beating Canada and Nigeria by double digits, it’s likely going to come down to the point margin to see who earns that top seed. France is currently at plus 42 points while Team USA is plus 58. France still has a game to play, though, and a loss would also keep them from earning the top seed moving forward.
