Roger Goodell Hints at Super Bowl Being Played Outside USA One Day

Football has become one of the biggest sports all across the world in recent years, overtaking other historic ones. It has grown to a scale that a league like the NFL may have never guessed but it’s helped the game expand as well.

The passion for the sport is unlike any other, with fans coming together every fall to tune in. NFL games have already been pushed overseas, including the annual London trips. But this year, we ever had a game played in Brazil as well.

Just ahead of Week 6, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that he could see the powerful league putting a Super Bowl outside the United States one day.

“We’ve always traditionally tried to play a Super Bowl in an NFL city — that was always sort of a reward for the cities that have NFL franchises,” he said in response to a question about moving the neutral-site game internationally. “But things change. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that happens one day.”

The NFL is a business so if the league were to decide that it was in their best interest financially, the game would be moved. But it doesn’t sound like this situation is close to happening, at least not yet.

If this were to occur, NFL fans and players in the United States likely wouldn’t be too happy. While many enjoy single games throughout the regular season, putting the most important game of the season overseas could cause some issues.

Players weren’t happy with the game in Brazil this year so it would also depend on where the game was played. The London games tend to go over fairly smoothly so the Super Bowl would probably be put there.

“Brazil was a big step for us, because we had never played in South America,” he said, via The Athletic. “That was an important element for us. We’re looking at other continents and other markets that we’ve never played in or haven’t played the regular-season games, and we want to get to those.”

However, the Super Bowl represents something bigger than just a football game. Many would see this as an issue and prefer that it be kept in the United States.

We likely won’t have to entertain this idea for a while but it seems the league is open to change. This notion would be interesting but for now, the Super Bowl will remain in the United States.
