The NFL preseason marches on tonight with a flurry of games, giving us a glimpse at some highly anticipated rookies and names to watch out for in training camp.
One of those aforementioned rookies is the 2024 draft’s third overall selection: New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
Maye has been highly scrutinized so far in training camp, with some fans going as far as claiming that sixth-round Patriots rookie Joe Milton III should be ahead of Maye on the depth chart. Maye wasn’t lights out in his first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, but he did only play one series and completed 2 of 3 passes for 19 yards.

Maye will have the opportunity to regain some faith from Patriots fans on Thursday as he takes on the Philadelphia Eagles. Here’s everything to know about the preseason contest:
Adam Rauzino, Winners and Whiners: Patriots (-2.5)
Rauzino writes, “The Philadelphia Eagles don’t necessarily play to win in the preseason. They are 2-6 in their eight preseason games under coach Nick Sirianni. The Patriots have a new coach who is interested in building a winning culture immediately. Furthermore, the Eagles don’t have a QB battle ongoing this preseason. Kenny Pickett will be the backup. QB Tanner McKee, who is third on the depth chart, struggled last week, connecting only 38% of his passes for 39 yards. Meanwhile, the Patriots do have a QB competition underway.”
Sascha Paruk, Sports Betting Dime: Patriots ML
Paruk writes, “Neither of these teams has been particularly good in the preseason over the last few years, but the Eagles in particular have been abysmal. Going back to 2021, Philadelphia is 2-6-2 in its last 10 preseason games. The fact that Hurts hasn’t played a preseason snap since Week 1 of 2022 is a good indication of how Nick Sirianni treats the preseason.”
Sam Farley, Covers: Under 35.5
Farley writes, “Given that Jalen Hurts didn’t step on the field during preseason last year, it seems very unlikely that we’ll see him at all until the regular season. That leaves the two previously mentioned QBs and Kenny Pickett. The former Steeler had a hugely impressive game against the Ravens, completing 14 of 22 passes with a touchdown and no interceptions. He’s expected to sit this week, which may be why the Eagles have gone from 3-point favorites to 2.5-point underdogs.”
The New England Patriots are favorites to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Thursday’s NFL preseason matchup, according to the BetMGM odds.
Odds as of Wednesday afternoon.
