It’s a tremendous day to be an NFL fan. Why? Because the 2024 NFL schedules have been released. Now, the questions of how excited/worried are fans over their teams schedule?
While a team may have postseason hopes this year, they could be unfortunate enough to face all of their toughest opponents at the end of the season. While another team may want to compete for their conference’s No. 1 seed, a series of tough away games against divisional opponents could spell their doom.
There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to a team’s difficulty of schedule. However, the most obvious factor is opponent win percentage. If the teams weren’t any good last year, why would they be good this year? Any team that gets the luxury of facing ten, 11, even 12 non-playoff teams from a season ago will obviously have an enormous advantage over an opponent who may only get to face seven or eight.
Here are the ten teams with the easiest schedules of the season, based on strength of schedule.
NFL schedule: What are the best grudge games of 2024?
Ranking based on NFL strength of schedule, which looks at opponent win% from 2023.
10) Tennessee Titans (.491 opponent win% in 2023)
At first glance, the Titans’ 2024 schedule is daunting. They have to face the entirety of the AFC North as well as each team in their own division twice. Seeing as how they were the only team in the AFC South to finish under .500 a season ago, you can see how this would appear to be a very difficult schedule. On top of that, the Titans’ lone NFC West matchup will be against the 9-8 Seahawks.
The only thing making the Titans’ schedule one of the easier ones this season is getting paired up with the NFC South. Having to face the worst team from a year ago as well as the eighth-worst team from a year go definitely makes this schedule easier to stomach for Titans’ fans. That said, it’s still much tougher than the win percentage indicates.
9) Arizona Cardinals (.488)
The Arizona Cardinals have the misfortune of being in the NFC West, meaning they’ll have to take on the 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams twice each. Each of those teams finished with records above .500 last year. However, aside from those six games, the Cardinals have it mostly easy.
Sure, they’ll still have to face the Lions, Dolphins, Bills, and Packers, but that’s fewer games against opponents who reached the playoffs last year than non-playoff participants. The Cardinals will have matchups against the Panthers, Patriots, and Commanders this season, meaning they will face every single team that had a worse draft pick than them. If that isn’t fortunate scheduling, then what is?
8) Miami Dolphins (.488)
Finishing second-place in a tough division and still getting an easy schedule? That sounds like a winning combination to me. The Dolphins will have three games against teams with less than five wins last season — Cardinals, Patriots (2x). That alone makes the Dolphins’ schedule easier than most, but the fact that the Dolphins do not have to face the Chiefs or Ravens at all next year also helps tremendously.
7) Seattle Seahawks (.488)
A third-place schedule in the NFC is pretty awesome. Not only will the Seahawks get matched up with teams like the Vikings and Giants, neither of which are expected to make playoff runs this year, but the team’s lone AFC West matchup is against the Denver Broncos, who could rely on either a rookie quarterback or Jarrett Stidham to win games.
Another solid aspect of the Seahawks’ schedule is that while they have eight games against opponents who reached the playoffs last year, only three will be on the road (49ers, Rams, Lions).
6) Los Angeles Chargers (.478)
After losing practically all of their skill position players from a year ago, the Chargers lucked out with their schedule. Of course, playing in the underwhelming AFC West helped them out tremendously. While the Chiefs are always tough opponents, the Raiders and Broncos are some of the more underwhelming second and third-place finishers in the NFL.
While the Chargers will have to face the AFC North this year, they will also play against all four teams in the NFC South, which sort of evens itself out. Lastly, their lone NFC West matchup will be against the Arizona Cardinals, who had an even worse record than the Chargers last year.
5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (.478)
Each of the five easiest schedules belong to teams in the NFC, which shouldn’t come as a shock considering there was an entire division that nearly finished under .500. Of all the teams in that division, the Bucs will have the hardest-schedule, having to face off against the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, and Dallas Cowboys this year.
4) Carolina Panthers (.467)
You would think that the Carolina Panthers, having finished last-place in the NFC South would have the easiest schedule of anyone in the NFC South, right? It only makes sense. However, what you fail to realize is that the Carolina Panthers will not play the Carolina Panthers twice this year. Instead, they get every other team in their division twice.
The rest of the Panthers’ schedule is remarkably easy though. They only have three non-divisional games against teams that went to the playoffs last year — Dallas, Philadelphia, and Kansas City — and two of those will be at home. Outside of those games, the Panthers’ most difficult opponent will be the Cincinnati Bengals (also at home). They will not have another non-divisional game against a team that finished 2023 over .500.
3) Chicago Bears (.467)
The Bears will have the luxury of facing every team that had a top-four draft pick in the 2024 draft, all while having the first overall pick for themselves. That is a tremendously lucky schedule.
Of course, the Bears do have a few tough contests on the docket. Most notably, two games against both the Packers and Lions as well as a matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. However, the Bears could easily steal one or two of those games giving them a great opportunity to reach the playoffs just two years after having the worst record in the NFL.
2) Atlanta Falcons (.453)
The Atlanta Falcons get the luxury of a third-place schedule and getting to play the Carolina Panthers twice. While the team did draw the short stick in their AFC North matchup against Pittsburgh, taking on the best third-place finisher in the NFL, they also get to face the weak AFC West as well. With Kirk Cousins in the fold this season, the Falcons’ weak schedule could put them in position to make some waves in 2024.
1) New Orleans Saints (.453)
The New Orleans Saints play in the worst division in football, got matched up with the worst division in the AFC, and will face two teams that had top-six picks. The Saints certainly have a lot of problems to deal with, but their schedule does not appear to be one of them.
