NFL Preview: Detroit Lions v Dallas Cowboys

NFL Preview: Detroit Lions v Dallas Cowboys

October 12, 2024

The Lions go into the game looking for their first win in Dallas since 2011. The Cowboys will need to avoid going 3-3 if they want to keep up with the 4-1 NFC East-leading Washington Commanders.

Team news

Detroit Lions

The Lions are coming out of their bye week relatively healthy. Only four Detroit players appeared on their injury report. However, Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, and Frank Ragnow have participated in practice meaning they will not carry a designation into Sunday. The only Lions player set to miss the game is starting guard Christian Mahograhy who is out with an illness.

Dallas Cowboys

Unlike the Lions, the Cowboys are dealing with a host of injuries with starters Brandon Cooks, Micah Parsons, Eric Kendricks, and DeMarcus Lawrence all out on Sunday.

DaRon Bland, Caelen Carson, and Nick Vigil are all questionable for Dallas.

Key players

Jared Goff (QB) – Detroit Lions

The Lions quarterback went a perfect 18-for-18 on pass completions in Detroit’s week four win over the Seattle Seahawks. Fresh off their bye week Goff has a chance to write his name in the NFL record books.

Going back to week three Goff has 19 consecutive pass completions and will break the record of 25 consecutive pass completions if he completes his first seven throws against the Cowboys. Nick Foles, Marcus Mariota, Philip Rivers, and Ryan Tannehill jointly hold the record.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell did not realize Goff went a perfect 18-18 until he was asked about it in his post-match press conference.

Campbell jokingly said:

“I just gave the game ball to somebody else. I feel awful.”

Goff has completed 71% of his passes so far this season (fourth in the NFL) and has thrown for more than 1000 yards. However, he only has five touchdowns and four interceptions through the first four games of the season.

Dak Prescott (QB) – Dallas Cowboys

Goff’s opposite can also make history on Sunday. Cowboys quarterback Prescott has thrown for at least 250 passing yards in 12 consecutive home games dating back to week 14 of the 2022 season.

If Dak throws for 250 yards or more against the Lions he will tie former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the third-longest streak of its kind. Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees holds the record with two separate streaks of 18 games. Dak is currently tied with seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady on 12 consecutive games.

Dak signed a record-breaking contract on September 8. He signed a four-year extension that includes $231 million guaranteed. It made him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

He has led the Cowboys to a 3-2 start throwing for 851 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

Head to Head

The two teams will meet for the 32nd time on Sunday. The Cowboys lead the series 19-12. They have won 11 of the last 14 contests between the two sides and each of the last six games against Detroit.
