Entering the 2024 NFL season, most NFL fans assumed that the San Francisco 49ers would continue to be the team to beat in the NFC West. They had just represented the NFC in Super Bowl 58, after all, and were positioned to return a healthy chunk of the roster that got them there.
Instead, the NFC West has become one of the most unpredictable divisions in the NFL.
With most of the NFL’s Week 14 action in the books, the NFC West remains a tightly packed division. All four of the teams in the division have between six and eight wins, so the final standings will depend greatly on the final four weeks of the 2024 NFL season.
Here’s what to know about the NFC West standings and how they are impacting the NFC playoff picture.
Below is a look at the NFC West pecking order through Week 14 of the 2024 NFL season.
The Seahawks are presently in control of the division, earning that perch atop the division thanks to their 30-18 win over the Cardinals. The victory marked the second time Seattle had beaten Arizona in the last three weeks and gave them a key head-to-head tiebreaker with the Cardinals.
Still, the Seahawks’ lead is narrow. They are only one game ahead of the Rams, who beat them head-to-head in a Week 9 overtime battle. As such, Seattle will have little room for error over the final four weeks of the season to win the division and earn a top-four seed in the NFC.
Speaking of the Rams, they seem to be rounding into form at the right time. Los Angeles earned a key Week 14 win in a 44-42 shootout against the Buffalo Bills, and that allowed the Rams to move ahead of the Cardinals in the divisional pecking order.
The Rams also stayed a game in front of the 49ers in the NFC West standings via their win. San Francisco earned a convincing 38-13 win over the Chicago Bears during which George Kittle and Jauan Jennings looked unstoppable while the 49ers defense sacked Caleb Williams a whopping seven times.
The Rams and 49ers will get a chance to stake their claim as the top challenger to the Seahawks atop the division in Week 15 when the two meet on “Thursday Night Football.”
As mentioned, the Seahawks have the inside track to win the NFC West. They do, however, have one of the most difficult remaining schedules of the four teams in the division, per Tankathon, so that could complicate their path to the top of the division.
Below is a look at each team’s remaining strength of schedule and where it ranks league-wide:
The good news for the Seahawks is that they have the best divisional record of the bunch at 3-2. That said, the Rams could overtake them in that category in Week 15 with a win over the 49ers, so Seattle is far from safe from being caught in that tiebreaker category.
Below is a look at each team’s record against the division:
With all that in mind, it seems possible that the power dynamic in the NFC West could continue to change in the coming weeks, like it has throughout the 2024 NFL season.
The NFC West seemed poised to produce just one playoff team for most of the 2024 NFL season. It is still likely on track to do that, but a slip-up by the NFC’s No. 7 seed, the 8-5 Washington Commanders, could open the door for the Seahawks, Rams, Cardinals or 49ers in the wild-card race.
Below is a full look at the conference’s playoff picture with most Week 14 results decided:
In the hunt: Los Angeles Rams (7-6), Atlanta Falcons (6-7), Arizona Cardinals (6-7), San Francisco 49ers (6-7), Dallas Cowboys (5-7), New Orleans Saints (5-8).
