New York Jets at San Francisco 49ers: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 1 game

September 4, 2024

Can Aaron Rodgers lead the New York Jets back to relevance? The veteran quarterback will look to stay healthy this season, but a massive early challenge awaits in the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers have been an offensive juggernaut the last few seasons, relying on athletic playmakers such as Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel to wear down defenses while Brock Purdy calls the signals. Their defense is no slouch either with Nick Bosa lurking on the edge.

San Francisco, though, fell just short of its goals in the last two seasons and has a Super Bowl on its mind. Can the 49ers get over the hump in 2024, or will the Jets make a statement in Week 1 against one of the NFL’s best?

Lorenzo Reyes: 49ers 21, Jets 18

This is a fascinating game, and I’m still going to be cautious with the Jets. I don’t know if they will be able to protect Aaron Rodgers, so I am taking a wait-and-see approach. Still, they have weapons on offense and a stingy defense. That said, the 49ers do, too. And the Niners have the track record and a recent history of success. I think San Francisco wins, but I expect it to be close, and low-scoring.

Tyler Dragon: 49ers 23, Jets 20

Aaron Rodgers makes his triumphant return after last season’s quick and abrupt end. Rodgers is in his home state, but the 49ers won’t provide much hospitality. Contract disputes and negotiations overshadowed the 49ers’ offseason, but the Niners settled contractual issues with wideout Brandon Aiyuk left tackle Trent Williams before the start of the regular season, which will give the club positive momentum. The 49ers boast one of the most talented rosters in the NFL and are eager to finally get over the hump as their Super Bowl window remains ajar.

Safid Deen: 49ers 27, Jets 17

It’ll be nice to see more than four snaps of Aaron Rodgers, but the 49ers won’t take him lightly. More importantly, San Francisco’s offense has too much firepower and continuity to lose at home in a season opener, especially on Monday night.

Richard Morin: 49ers 30, Jets 17

This is a game to avoid. It’s easy to see this one ending up as a nailbiter or a blowout, which is not a recipe for success from a betting perspective. I think San Francisco controls this one easily, but there are too many variables to feel comfortable.
