New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals: Predictions, picks, odds for NFL Week 1 game

September 4, 2024

Bill Belichick‘s final season in New England didn’t exactly go according to plan. The Patriots were one of the worst teams in the NFL, but they did express a willingness to change by getting rid of Mac Jones and replacing him with 2024’s third-overall pick, Drake Maye. The Patriots‘ offense still lacks any elite weapons, but with breakout candidates like Ja’Lynn Polk and DeMario Douglas, there is a chance the Patriots’ offense will evade the cellar of the NFL in 2024.

Their opponents in Week 1 will be the Cincinnati Bengals. Everyone knows what to expect from this team. So long as they have Joe Burrow, they will be competitive, even in the harsh AFC North. However, the potential absence of Ja’Marr Chase amid contract disputes could hinder this offense rather drastically. After all, before Chase burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2021, Burrow was viewed as a good, but not MVP-caliber quarterback. Chase’s arrival changed that narrative instantly, and the pair coasted their way to an AFC championship. Injuries and contracts have halted a return, but this is a team that can battle with the best of the best when fully healthy.

NFL Week 1 odds, predictions and picks

Ravens vs. Chiefs | Packers vs. Eagles | Jaguars vs. Dolphins | Steelers vs. Falcons | Vikings vs. Giants | Panthers vs. Saints | Patriots vs. Bengals | Titans vs. Bears | Cardinals vs. Bills | Texans vs. Colts | Raiders vs. Chargers | Broncos vs. Seahawks | Commanders vs. Buccaneers | Cowboys vs. Browns | Rams vs. Lions | Jets vs. 49ers

Lorenzo Reyes: Bengals 29, Patriots 14

Rookie head coach, depleted roster and a transitional moment for the team’s culture, the Patriots may struggle this year — especially early in the season. Cincinnati, meanwhile, is healthy and Joe Burrow should be plenty motivated after a season he spent battling injuries. I think Cincy rolls and covers the biggest line of the week.

Tyler Dragon: Bengals 27, Patriots 20

Zac Taylor, Joe Burrow and the Bengals get a glorified exhibition game against a rebuilding Patriots squad in Week 1. The Bengals are expected to be a contender in the AFC. The Patriots are expected to be in contention for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft.

Safid Deen: Bengals 24, Patriots 13

Joe Burrow may or may not have Ja’Marr Chase, but the Bengals should be just fine and will win big against the new-look Patriots, beginning a new era without former coach Bill Belichick.

Jordan Mendoza: Bengals 36, Patriots 17

The Patriots’ two touchdowns will come in garbage time. It’s going to be a long season in New England, and with or without Ja’Marr Chase this is as good as a scheduled loss for Jerod Mayo and Co.
