Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has separated himself as the clear betting favorite in the race to be the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

The 51-year-old Democrat has been at the top of the oddsmakers’ boards since Kamala Harris assumed the presumptive presidential nomination from the party after President Joe Biden dropped out. Shapiro was neck and neck with Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and has fended off charges from Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Kentucky Gov. Andrew Beshear.

The action, which U.S. bookmakers cannot legally take part in, coalesced around Shapiro on Wednesday. Shapiro stood at +120 at British bookmaker Bet365 on Tuesday but was at -260 (meaning a bettor would need to wager $260 to win $100) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pennsylvania governor was a similar favorite at the other sportsbooks USA TODAY has regularly surveyed.

USA TODAY reported Wednesday that Harris will tour battleground states with her vice presidential pick next week and that she intends to announce the choice before Wednesday, Aug. 7.
