The Pittsburgh Steelers overhauled the quarterback position during the offseason. First, they signed former Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks starter Russell Wilson before trading for former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.
The two moves left the franchise with options at quarterback entering training camp. During the preseason, the Steelers named Wilson the starting quarterback but he aggravated a calf injury in September and hasn’t started since.
Fields has gone 3-2 as a starter this season with 961 passing yards, 44 rushing yards, and eight total touchdowns (five passing, three rushing). Wilson finally practiced this week and is active for the first time this season for Pittsburgh’s Week 6 game in Las Vegas. Here’s the latest on his status.
Wilson is active but will not start. He will be the No. 2 quarterback against the Raiders.
“I like what I’ve seen out there, but again, health and rust are two different things,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said on Friday. “I thought he had a good week displaying his health, his ability to protect himself. Now it’s just a process of getting reacclimated.”
The Steelers play the Raiders Sunday before consecutive home games against the New York Jets and New York Giants. Pittsburgh has its bye in Week 9.
“I thought he had a good week,” Tomlin said of Wilson. “He’s proven his health. Now it’s just a matter of knocking the rust off.”
Wilson’s calf injury happened early on in the Steelers’ training camp. He aggravated it in September ahead of Week 1.
