Outside of the Breeders’ Cup, there are only two $1 million Thoroughbred races left in California. The lack of supplemental gambling revenue, as in sports betting and slot machines and historic horse racing, has put a crimp in purses.
The Pacific Classic (G1) during the Del Mar summer is one exception. Santa Anita offers the other Saturday with the Grade 1 California Crown, a jacked-up reboot of what was the $300,000
Awesome Again. National Treasure and Muth bring a combined five Grade 1 wins from
the Bob Baffert barn that won this race a record eight times before it got its
new name.
The Stronach Group’s 1/ST Racing wants to make the card as
big a party as its Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) has become during the Florida
winter. Aside from concerts and parties, the $750,000 John Henry Turf
Championship (G2) and the $750,000 Eddie D (G2) will offer bigger purses, and
the $200,000 City of Hope Mile (G2) is a Breeders’ Cup qualifier as is the feature.
Counting the California celebration, 16 graded stakes, including
six Breeders’ Cup qualifiers, plus a Canada classic are scheduled this weekend
at five tracks.
Saturday
California Crown (G1), Santa Anita, 1 1/8 miles,
3-year-olds and up, Breeders’ Cup Classic automatic qualifier
On one hand there is National Treasure, he of the three
Grade 1 wins and $5,378,000 in earnings for SF Racing and its seven partners.
The 4-year-old Quality Road colt has earned trophies from the Preakness in
2023, the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) early this year and the Met Mile
(G1) in June. Curiously, he is 0-for-5 at his home track Santa Anita, notably
coming within a nose and a stewards review of Cody’s Wish in the 2023 Breeders’
Cup Dirt Mile. On the other hand there is Muth, Amr Zedan’s 3-year-old Good
Magic colt who is 3-for-3 this year. He might have been 4-for-4 if he had not
spiked a fever three days before the Preakness. Muth came back from a
five-month break to win Sept. 1 in the Shared Belief at Del Mar. If the angle
is to play the other Baffert, then Santa Anita Handicap (G1) victor Newgate
would fill the bill coming in off a nearly six-month break since
he finished ninth in the Dubai World Cup (G1).

John Henry Turf Championship (G2), Santa Anita, 1 1/4
miles, turf, 3-year-olds and up
This has all the trappings of a repeat of the Aug. 31 Del
Mar Handicap (G2) with all six starters entered to cut back from that 1 3/8-mile
race and line up for a rematch. Gold Phoenix delivered as the 2-1 favorite that
day, rallying to win by a neck over Dicey Mo Chara with Balnikhov, Rockemperor,
Master Piece and El Encinal finishing behind them in that order. A 6-year-old
gelding trained by Phil D’Amato, Gold Phoenix finished fifth in last year’s
John Henry. He is 3-for-13 at Santa Anita, winning the Charles Whittingham (G2)
in May covering the same 1 1/4 miles as Saturday’s race.

Eddie D (G2), Santa Anita, 6 1/2 furlongs, turf,
3-year-olds and up
It has been a while since Two Rivers Over has seen the spotlight.
He made a most favorable impression last out March 30 when he won the Godolphin
Mile (G2) on the Dubai World Cup undercard. It was quite the step up for the
4-year-old gelding whose biggest win before that for trainer Doug O’Neill was
last fall in the Zia Park Derby. The Santa Anita racing office reported Sunday
that filly Ag Bullet, who is 4-for-4 at Santa Anita, was removed from consideration with trainer Richard Baltas thinking the 4-year-old daughter of Twirling
Candy may need a little more time after winning Aug. 31 in the Ladies Turf
Sprint (G2) at Kentucky Downs.

since he was switched to turf at the end of his 2-year-old season. Now 4, the

Anita turf. In his last start Johannes won July 28 in the Eddie Read (G2) at
Del Mar, earning a 103 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form.
Not to be overlooked, 3-year-old Trikari ships in for Amerman Racing and
trainer Graham Motion off consecutive victories in the Belmont Derby Invitational

War Like Goddess might not be the same horse who won 10 of
her first 14 races, but she is the two-time defending winner of this race
coinciding with its temporary move from Belmont Park to Aqueduct. Now 7 with
$2,875,184 in career earnings, the English Channel mare owned by George
Krikorian and trained by Bill Mott is 1-for-3 this year. She finished a troubled
third in the New York (G1) at Saratoga, first in the Robert G. Dick Memorial
(G3) at Delaware Park and most recently second as the 6-5 favorite in the Flower
Bowl (G2) at Saratoga.

Skippylongstocking comes in off his win in the Charles Town
Classic (G2), Tapit Trice won two back in the Monmouth Cup (G3), and Crupi
scored in the Suburban (G2) during Belmont Stakes week. But come on. How does
anyone ignore a horse who is 10-for-10? Kay Army is a young 4-year-old,
having been foaled in August 2020 south of the Equator. He has not raced in the
last six months, but he has breezed six times since he was bought and moved north
to Mott. Kay Army’s last six wins were Group 1s in his native Chile. All
but one of his races have been on turf with the lone exception being a
six-length win two back in the 1 3/8-mile Chile St. Leger. If money can be used
as a prism, this mystery horse has lifetime earnings of nearly 400 million
Chile pesos. That comes out to US$421,708.

Carrying a 2-for-2 record, Zulu Kingdom was bred in Ireland

lengths on seven furlongs of very soft turf for legendary trainer André Fabre.
He was sold by Fabre’s wife Elisabeth to a partnership led by Sol Kumin’s Madaket
Stables and transferred to Chad Brown. That led to a neck win in the With
Anticipation (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on firm turf Aug. 29 at Saratoga.

Hit Show has won twice in Grade 3 stakes, most recently Aug. 4 when he
closed to score by a half-length in the West Virginia Governor’s (G3) at Mountaineer.
This will be his fifth try to get a win at a higher level. Among his losses,
the 4-year-old Candy Ride colt trained by Brad Cox finished fifth at 24-1 in
last year’s Kentucky Derby and fourth at 9-1 in the 2023 Belmont Stakes. Owned
by Qatar-based Wathnan Racing, Hit Show came back from a 7 1/2-month break to
win a $100,000 allowance race over the same course and distance as the Lukas

There is every reason to think Saudi Crown will be favored after
his gate-to-wire victory Aug. 11 in the one-mile R.A. Cowboy Jones at Ellis
Park. The 4-year-old Always Dreaming colt trained by Cox won the 2023
Pennsylvania Derby (G1) in the Parx slop. He began 2024 with a 5 3/4-length
triumph in the Louisiana Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds, earning a 105 Beyer.
Owned by Saudi Arabia-based FMQ Stables, he then came in a close third in the
$20 million Saudi Cup (G1) before he looked empty finishing 12th in the Godolphin
Mile. A four-month break preceded his win at Ellis, where he went off at 3-5
odds. Saudi Crown is 4-for-4 when he is the post-time favorite.

Durham Cup (G3), Woodbine, 1 1/8 miles, synthetic,
3-year-olds and up
Paramount Prince, whose intended entry was confirmed Sunday by trainer Mark Casse, has proven himself a must-consider commodity for bettors this year. The 2023 King’s Plate winner graduated to open-company graded stakes in 2024 at Woodbine. After finishing a tantalizingly close third to Palazzi in the Eclipse (G2), the 4-year-old Society’s Chairman gelding led at every call to win both the Dominion Day (G3) and Seagram Cup (G3) this summer. If Casse were to win Saturday, he would join fellow dual Hall of Famer Roger Attfield with his record-tying sixth triumph in this race that was first run in 1906. Since the Woodbine racing office does not normally divulge possible and probable starters, this list is based on information from trainers and training patterns.
Sunday
Miss Grillo (G2), Belmont at Aqueduct, 1 1/16 miles,
turf, 2-year-old fillies, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf automatic
qualifier
After a poor start in her debut against males, Shifty was
moved into 2-year-old female company for the $150,000 Catch A Glimpse Stakes at
Woodbine. She did not disappoint Casse or bettors who took her at
11-1, leading the whole way and winning by 1 3/4 lengths. The $350,000 Medaglia
d’Oro filly owned by Leonard and Lois Green stretches to two turns for the
first time. Totally Justified comes into this race off a victory in the listed
P.G. Johnson Stakes going 1 1/16 miles for trainer Rusty Arnold at Saratoga.

Entries will not be taken for this race until Wednesday, but
it looks like Ways and Means may be scaring off the would-be competition. The
3-year-old Practical Joke daughter bred and owned by Seth Klarman and trained by Chad
Brown won as the odds-on favorite Aug. 3 in a muddy renewal of the Test (G1) at
Saratoga. Two months before that, Ways and Means won by 8 1/4 lengths going a

and Means and 3-for-3 allowance winner Nic’s Style as probable entrants. The
names listed as possible are left over from last week.

Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2), Santa Anita, 6 furlongs, 3-year-olds and up
This race should be called the Off the Bench Special. Last
out in May, Straight No Chaser was a 7-10 favorite. He stumbled out of the gate
and got hustled to the lead only to fizz out late and finish fourth in the
Runhappy (G3) at Belmont at the Big A. That was only his second start for trainer
Dan Blacker since he won the May 2023 Maryland Sprint (G3) at Pimlico.
Baffert has aimed two long-absent, 4-year-old colts for this race. Three-time
stakes winner Speed Boat Beach has not raced since he won Dec. 26 in the Malibu
(G1). That was the last time Grade 3 winner Fort Bragg was seen in the
afternoon. He finished sixth that day. Grade 2 victor Dr. Venkman, a fresher
contender, comes in off a fourth-place outcome Aug. 31 for Mark Glatt in the Pacific Classic

Zenyatta (G2), Santa Anita, 1 1/16 miles, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
The possibilities seem endless for this race lacking for now in likely
entrants, according to the track racing office, so dare to dream. Baffert’s
5-year-old star and championship contender Adare Manor won this race last year.
She could return bringing her three-race winning streak and be a post-time
favorite for the 12th time in a row. Sweet Azteca also is a possibility for trainer Michael McCarthy. The lightly
raced 4-year-old has won 4 of 5 including the Beholder Mile (G1), the Great
Lady M (G2) and the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3). Desert Dawn, one of the two
probables, finished second for D’Amato in last year’s Zenyatta. Since the
Sunday card at Santa Anita will not be drawn until Thursday, the list of potential starters is
very much subject to change.

Breeders’ Stakes, Woodbine, 1 1/2 miles, turf,
Canada-bred 3-year-olds
The last of the Canada classics is not unlike the Belmont Stakes. If there is not a live Triple Crown possibility, some of the starch is taken out of the buildup. Since King’s Plate winner Caitlinhergrtness is not walking back through that gate, Vitality will try to put together the more modest accomplishment of winning consecutive jewels after finishing first Sept. 10 in the Prince of Wales on the Fort Erie dirt. This would be the Street Boss gelding’s first turf foray in more than 11 months.

Oklahoma Derby (G3), Remington Park, 1 1/8 miles,
3-year-olds
How good is undefeated Most Wanted? Gary and Mary West’s homebred Candy Ride colt led the whole way and held on to win by a nose Aug. 11 in the one-mile Ellis Park Derby. He brings a 3-for-3 record to Remington, where Cox stretches him against Indispensable, E J Won the Cup and Dimatic. Mike Smith flies in from California to ride Indispensable, trainer John Sadler’s maiden winner who finished second to Muth last month in the Shared Belief. E J Won the Cup has two black-type victories for O’Neill, most recently by 9 1/4 lengths Aug. 24 to get a 101 Beyer in the St. Louis Derby. Allowance winner Dimatic, trained by Steve Asmussen ran second to Dragoon Guard last month in the West Virginia Derby (G3).
