Falcons at Commanders: Predictions, picks, odds for NFL Week 17 game

The stakes are high for a “Sunday Night Football” tilt featuring the Atlanta Falcons (8-7) and the Washington Commanders (10-5).

Michael Penix had a nice debut with a victory − and it certainly helped it came against the awful New York Giants. The defense ruled the day and after weeks of feeling like the team was falling apart, Atlanta is now back in first place in the NFC South and controls its destiny. As long as no mistakes are made, the Falcons are en route to a playoff spot.

Another rookie quarterback in Jayden Daniels is coming off the signature win of his first season, taking down the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles with a last-minute touchdown. A playoff spot is all but assured in what has been an amazing season, and the surging Commanders have a chance to put on a show in front of the home crowd on primetime.

Lorenzo Reyes: Commanders 31, Falcons 24

Michael Penix did well in his first career start, but the Commanders are playing with momentum behind rookie Jayden Daniels. At home, I like Washington in this spot.

Tyler Dragon: Commanders 27, Falcons 24

Jayden Daniels presumably locked up NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in last week’s comeback win. Fellow rookie QB Michael Penix has a chance to lead the Falcons into the playoffs. The Falcons control their destiny but fall in primetime.

Richard Morin: Commanders 21, Falcons 17

Home turf matters a lot in this matchup. I expect this one to be close, but Washington does enough to come out on top.

Jordan Mendoza: Commanders 27, Falcons 23

Jayden Daniels has been sensational, and Michael Penix has a chance to show the nation why he was a top-10 pick. Both quarterbacks play great but a late mistake by the Falcons gives Washington the victory.
