Week 7 of the NFL season is one of the best on the schedule so far. Sunday features three divisional matchups, including a pivotal game against NFC North contenders Minnesota and Detroit, as well as a Super Bowl rematch between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers hosting the Chiefs is just the 10th time in NFL history that a Super Bowl rematch has happened in the following regular season but the fifth since 2014. The defending champions are 7-2 in the rematch; only the 1993 Buffalo Bills and last year’s Philadelphia Eagles got a win over the teams they lost to in the Super Bowl.

Here’s how the last four Super Bowl rematches in the regular have panned out.

Recent NFL regular season Super Bowl rematches

2023: Philadelphia Eagles 21, Kansas City Chiefs 17

The Eagles went on the road last season to face the Chiefs in Week 11. Ten months earlier, Kansas City came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win Super Bowl LVII on a field goal in the final seconds of the game.

In the rematch, Philadelphia was the team to come back from a 10-point deficit at halftime. The Eagles outscored the Chiefs 14-0 behind two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Jalen Hurts to win their fourth game in a row. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni had words for Chiefs fans after the game but Kansas City would have the last word, winning another title as the Eagles lost in the wild card round of the playoffs.

2017: New England Patriots 23, Atlanta Falcons 7

Atlanta went on the road in Week 7 to take on New England in a rematch of the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. Few things are as tough for a fan base to hear as “28-3” for Falcons fans, Atlanta’s lead in Super Bowl LI in before New England won 34-28 in overtime.

The Falcons didn’t have much luck in the rematch on either. They had a field goal blocked on their second drive of the game and the Patriots rattled off 17 unanswered points before halftime. The Falcons finally got on the board with a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones with 4:09 left in the game.

2016: Denver Broncos 21, Carolina Panthers 20

NFL fans got a treat in the 2016 NFL season with a Super Bowl rematch on opening night. Seven months and one day after dominating in Super Bowl 50, the Broncos hosted Carolina at Mile High to kick off the regular season.

Both offenses played better in the rematch with 640 total yards combined compared to 509 in Super Bowl 50. Carolina had more points by halftime than the entire Super Bowl and went into the break up 17-7. But two second-half touchdowns by the Broncos’ C.J. Anderson put Denver ahead for good.

2014: Seattle Seahawks 26, Denver Broncos 20

Seattle put on one of the most dominant performances in Super Bowl history with their 43-8 win over Denver in Super Bowl XLVIII. In Week 3 of the 2014 season, the Seahawks hosted the Broncos in Seattle for a Sunday afternoon rematch.

The Seahawks looked set for another dominant win behind a 17-3 lead after three quarters. But Denver came back and forced overtime with a 41-second touchdown drive culminating in a Peyton Manning pass to Demaryius Thomas on a two-point conversion to make it 20-20 at the end of regulation. Seattle would seal the win in overtime with a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run.
