Gowanus, located in northwest Brooklyn, New York City, has been recognized as one of the most up-and-coming neighbourhoods in the United States.
The travel website selected 16 neighbourhoods from 16 different cities out of 25 cities considered. The selection criteria included the presence of trendy cocktail bars, coffee houses, eateries, boutiques, as well as LGBTQ-friendly and vegan spots that have emerged in recent years.
Additionally, the level of development in each neighborhood, including housing and general infrastructure, was considered. This development has contributed to a demographic shift towards young professionals.
Gowanus earned its spot on the list partly due to significant regeneration efforts in this formerly industrial neighborhood. These efforts have attracted a growing community of creatives who now live and work there. The district’s appeal is further enhanced by several entertainment venues, such as a rustic wine bar, a brewery and taproom, and a comedy and music venue housed in a 1920s warehouse.
Other neighborhoods making the list include three on the east coast: Brewerytown in Philadelphia, near its famous zoo; Edgewood in Washington D.C., a few miles from downtown; and Little River in Miami, close to the Miami Design District.
The remaining 12 neighbourhoods are spread across the central U.S., west coast, and south. They include Buckman in Oregon, Butcher town in Louisville, Bywater in New Orleans, Cork town in Detroit, Deep Ellum in Dallas, Frog town in Los Angeles, Govalle in Austin, Greenwood in Seattle, North Park in San Diego, Outer Sunset in San Francisco, Pilsen in Chicago, and Wedgewood-Houston in Nashville.
