Binghamton has made a significant leap up in one of the nation’s most recognized college ranking lists. The University moved up 47 spots, from #85 to #38, in the “Best Value” category in the 2025 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges.”

Looking at public universities specifically, Binghamton was ranked the #4 best value in the nation and the #1 best value in New York.

“I’m happy that we’ve made such a tremendous jump in one of the most prestigious lists in the nation – and even more happy about what this means for our students,” said President Harvey Stenger. “Binghamton students enjoy top-ranked academic programs with renowned faculty at a fraction of the cost of rival universities, and this ranking highlights that significant value.”

Outside of the “Best Value” category, the University also ranked high in the “National Universities” category, maintaining its best-ever spot of #73. The University also remained among the top 50 public universities in the U.S., a distinction it has held for over a quarter century. This year, Binghamton was ranked the #34 public in the nation.

U.S. News bases its Best Value Schools rankings on four factors:

  • ratio of academic quality to cost (50%)
  • number of students receiving need-based aid (20%)
  • number of students receiving scholarships or grants (20%)
  • average discount from the school’s total sticker price (10%)

“I’m thrilled to see that the value of a Binghamton education is becoming even more recognized on the national level,” said Provost Donald Hall. “This ranking demonstrates that Binghamton is an exceptional, and practical, option for students and families who are making that big decision.”

Binghamton also placed in U.S. News’ rankings of schools that are best for veterans (#42), social mobility (#82), nursing (#114); computer science (#126); business #94; engineering (#98) psychology (#79); and economics (#114).

Binghamton was also recently named to The Wall Street Journal’s “2025 Best Colleges in the U.S.”, Forbes’ “America’s Top College” and The Princeton Review’s “Top 10 Best Value Colleges Without Aid.”
