Baltimore Ravens at Kansas City Chiefs: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 1 game

September 4, 2024

play

The Kansas City Chiefs (0-0) begin their title defense with an AFC championship rematch against the Baltimore Ravens.

The defending Super Bowl champions bring back stars such as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and others, while the Ravens, led by Lamar Jackson, are looking for revenge. Can the Ravens break through the Chiefs‘ dynasty this season and bring the Lombardi Trophy to Baltimore? Or will Kansas City continue to boat race the competition in the AFC in 2024?

The Ravens lost, 17-10, in the last meeting between the teams that punched the Chiefs’ ticket to another Super Bowl, but Baltimore is using its bitterness over that defeat to fuel its 2024 season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have continued to stay in the offseason headlines for various reasons; will they be ready to rumble when the new season kicks off?

It’s a long season ahead, but it all gets started when these titans clash on Thursday.

Lorenzo Reyes: Ravens 23, Chiefs 17

Baltimore suffered some offseason losses on defense, but after a disappointing exit from the playoffs — at the hands of Kansas City — I’m expecting the Ravens to learn from their mistakes and trust the rushing game. Plus, with the commotion of the kickoff game and commemorating their consecutive Super Bowl titles, the Chiefs may start a little slow.

Tyler Dragon: Chiefs 24, Ravens 23

The Chiefs begin their quest to be the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowl championships. Kansas City dropped its opener last year after they lifted the Super Bowl 57 banner. They won’t have the same fate in the 2024 kickoff game, even though Lamar Jackson and the Ravens have revenge on their mind after last year’s AFC championship game. The Ravens need a game or two to figure their offense out with the addition of Derrick Henry. Plus, Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City’s passing attack figures to be more explosive this year with the return of JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy.

Safid Deen: Ravens 26, Chiefs 23

Baltimore might not be able to avenge what was at stake in last season’s AFC title game loss, but it’ll take a victory to spoil Kansas City’s title defense. Derrick Henry should have a steady workload to take pressure off Lamar Jackson and the Ravens while giving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense limited chances to hurt them on Thursday night. Justin Tucker wins it for the Ravens.

Richard Morin: Ravens 23, Chiefs 21

While the Chiefs are still getting a field goal in this one, it could be the Ravens’ superstar kicker who flips the oddsmakers’ script in this one. Folks will lament another slow start for the defending champions, but they’ll be fine. Let Baltimore enjoy the moment.
