Walking in a winter wonderland.
The Buffalo Bills are set to host the San Francisco 49ers in a battle of east meets west to conclude the Sunday slate of Week 13. While the football will be the focus, the weather is stealing all the headlines.
Lake effect snow has blanketed the area, promising to bury the region before the late kickoff. While it doesn’t appear that the snow will fall during the game, it will surely be a talking point as temperatures drop into the 20s.
As for the action on the gridiron, San Francisco desperately needs a win to get back on track and keep their playoff hopes alive. For Buffalo, a win will clinch the AFC East with six weeks to go in the season.
Here’s what to know for “Sunday Night Football” in Week 13.
It comes as no surprise that the Bills are amongst the AFC’s best this season. That’s a familiar spot for the group, but the focus remains on finding postseason success. They won’t get over the hump with a win in Week 13, however, though it would do wonders for their quest to secure the top seed in the conference.
If the Bills can secure a first-round bye and home-field advantage, that would give them their best chance of finally returning to the Super Bowl. Before getting to that point, there’s plenty of work to do, but the AFC is noticeably weaker than it has been in recent years.
Josh Allen is playing at an MVP level, with 18 touchdowns to just five interceptions. The sometimes reckless Allen is playing under control and much more free without Stefon Diggs in a more well-balanced passing attack. As a result, Buffalo is back to being a challenging offense to defend, averaging 29.1 points per game, which is third-most in the league. On the flip side, the Buffalo defense is giving up the seventh-fewest points per game, 19.5.
That’s a tough reality for opponents but one that San Francisco must face on Sunday night.
The 49ers are dealing with a battered defense, multiple injuries along the offensive line and a beat-up quarterback. The defending NFC champions are 5-6 through 11 games, last in the NFC West. Other than that, things are great. It appears the Super Bowl hangover has come for San Francisco, who haven’t been right all season.
Sunday night’s matchup is a battle between teams seemingly heading in opposite directions, even if the 49ers are hanging onto their playoff hopes for dear life.
“Sunday Night Football” is set to kick off at its normal time of 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 1.
As usual, Mike Tirico will handle the play-by-play and Cris Collinsworth will provide analysis. Melissa Stark is slated to patrol the sidelines. NBC’s “Football Night in America” begins at 7 p.m. ET, with Maria Taylor, Jason Garrett, Chris Simms, Mike Florio, Devin McCourty, Tony Dungy and more joining the program.
For the 2024 NFL season, NBC will broadcast “Sunday Night Football” weekly.
