NFL fans are gearing up for one of the best holiday traditions in sports. The league is set to kick off its playoff push with three Thanksgiving games, featuring several teams vying for playoff spots.
As always, the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys will be holiday hosts. The Lions began their tradition 90 years ago while the Cowboys have been hosting Thanksgiving games since before the NFL-AFL merger.
The NFL penciled in the Chicago Bears and New York Giants to face the Lions and Cowboys, respectively, hoping that the divisional rivalries would add some spice to the Thanksgiving menu. The league also decided to cap off its Thanksgiving slate with a juicy matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins, who are both trying to establish themselves among the NFL’s top wild-card contenders.
After chowing down on turkey, potatoes, pie and more, NFL fans will certainly want to retire to the couch to catch these matchups, whether it’s to watch the high-flying Lions offense in action or to get a good dose of schadenfreude checking out the Cowboys and Giants amid their difficult seasons.
Here’s what to know about the NFL’s three Thanksgiving games and where to watch them all.
CBS will carry the Lions vs. Bears game to kick-start the Thanksgiving Day slate. The game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. ET and will take place in Detroit, the home of the franchise that initiated the NFL’s Thanksgiving game tradition in 1934.
The Lions (10-1) are looking to extend their winning streak to 10 and snap a seven-game losing streak on Thanksgiving. Detroit can also position itself to clinch a playoff berth with a win; it would mark the first time the team has made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since it made three consecutive postseason appearances from 1993-95.
Meanwhile, the Bears (4-7) are hoping to snap a five-game losing streak. They are coming off a 30-27 overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings, so their stamina will be tested on the hyper-short week.
Fox is set to broadcast the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game at 4:30 p.m. ET. Dallas has hosted games on the holiday since 1966 and has customarily played after the Lions’ early afternoon game.
Dallas’ season hasn’t gone as planned, as the team is sitting at just 4-7 entering the Thanksgiving clash. That said, the Cowboys are coming off a 34-26 upset of the Washington Commanders and showed some life on offense despite being without Dak Prescott (hamstring). Cooper Rush will look to put together another solid game while Micah Parsons will try to put a lot of pressure on the Giants’ quarterback.
Speaking of the Giants, New York is just 2-9 and is coming off a crushing 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team released Daniel Jones and will now rely on either Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock to lead it on Thanksgiving. DeVito got the start against the Buccaneers but struggled and picked up a forearm injury in the contest.
NBC will broadcast the final game of the NFL’s Thanksgiving tripleheader. Amazon Prime typically owns the rights to Thursday night games, but NBC has retained the Thanksgiving night game rights as part of its “Sunday Night Football” package. As such, the game will begin at 8:20 p.m. ET, as is customary for NBC’s “SNF” games in 2024.
The Packers (8-3) are looking to keep pace with the Lions (10-1) and Vikings (9-2) in the loaded NFC North. They have won two games coming out of their bye and will now look to beat the Dolphins on what figures to be a cold night at Lambeau Field.
Miami (5-6) is one of the hottest teams in the NFL, but the Dolphins may cool off if the weather is unfavorable. Tua Tagovailoa is 0-7 in games where the temperature is 45 degrees or lower, and game-time temperature is expected to be 19 degrees in Green Bay, per Weather.com. But if Tagovailoa and Co. can overcome that trend, the Dolphins will continue to establish themselves as a surging wild-card contender.
