The calendar still says 2024, but the Cowboys might be on to 2025.
Dallas’ Jones family has fallen behind the NFL’s Joneses this season, resulting in what is becoming a lost season. Now Dak Prescott is sidelined for multiple weeks with a hamstring injury and CeeDee Lamb is nursing a shoulder ailment. An already battered defense isn’t living up to the hype from last year.
Whatever your reason, the Cowboys are in a bit of trouble. While they watch other teams across the NFL get in on the trade deadline fun, Dallas is sitting on the sidelines. However, that may not be for long.
The blockbuster rental likely isn’t coming any sooner than the retail store’s revival, but maybe a move with an eye to 2025 could be on the table. Or maybe the team is ready to part ways with some of their players in what could become only the third losing season in the last decade. No matter what happens, the Cowboys always find themselves in the thick of things and likely won’t go quietly into the trade deadline night.
Here’s everything to know about the 2024 NFL trade deadline and the latest rumors surrounding the Cowboys.
During a radio interview on Monday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that the team could still make some moves. He didn’t say specifically whether the team is in buy or sell mode, but did point out the team will make a move if it makes sense for them. With injuries mounting, it’s a wonder which side of the spectrum Dallas is leaning more towards.
ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that after the Cowboys’ third straight loss, Dallas could be in the market to improve the roster. “The point is, we got a shot, we think, to improve our roster.” Jerry Jones had mostly stuck to the idea that his team wouldn’t be making any moves, but he at least kept the door cracked open heading into Week 9.
The Athletic reports that while there is “uncertainty about how the rest of 2024 will play out” for the Cowboys, they aren’t expected to make any moves before the NFL trade deadline. Things can always change, but that seems to be the likely outcome for the Cowboys.
Jerry Jones was asked about the NFL trade deadline, specifically whether the team would do anything signficant, during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Friday.
“If I see something,” Jones said, before adding: “We look for all the meat on the bone that can improve our team.”
This section will be updated following any Cowboys trades.
The NFL trade deadline is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. ET. Once the deadline passes, teams won’t be able to trade players until the new league year begins in March 2025.
