Aaron Rodgers blames the media for Jets’ current struggles
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers blamed the media for his team’s problems following their Week 7 loss.
Sports Seriously
The 2024 New York Jets’ flight is grounded. They were originally considered a team that could soar to new heights, or at least heights they haven’t experienced during a league-leading 13 seasons and counting long playoff drought. In many ways, the team has done everything they can.
They gave Aaron Rodgers every tool they could to succeed, but the 40-year-old quarterback is showing his age. They fired head coach Robert Saleh after a slow start, but the interim coach, Jeff Ulbrich, hasn’t gotten them back on track. They traded for Rodgers’ running mate from his days in Green Bay, Davante Adams, but that hasn’t worked out in the first two games since.
In many ways, the Jets are a broken franchise. As they head into the 2024 NFL trade deadline, it’s less about who the team can acquire and more about which players they’ll show the door. While the news and rumors have certainly cooled on “Gang Green,” there is still time left for fireworks before the phones are hung up.
In what was supposed to be an all-in season, the Jets appear primed to fold. With a playoff drought that is the longest in sports, however, no one knows what the deadline will bring when the dust settles. Here are the latest rumors and news related to the 2024 Jets trade deadline.
This section will be updated as trades occur and relevant news about potential trade targets becomes available.
Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich spoke to reporters after New York’s “Thursday Night Football” victory over the Texans and said that the team’s No. 3 receiver, Allen Lazard, was dealing with a “really funky injury.” It is impacting the wideout’s sternum and the AC joint in his shoulder, per Ulbrich, and there is no timetable for his return.
Could that convince the Jets to keep Mike Williams? It’s not guaranteed, but Lazard is on IR and will need to miss at least the next three games after being out for the TNF contest. Thus, Williams may have a better chance of sticking in New York than initially anticipated.
Albert Breer told Rich Eisen in appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” that the Raiders tried to acquire Mike Williams as part of the Davante Adams trade with the Jets. New York wasn’t willing just to throw Williams is and held onto him in the hopes of landing a real asset for him ahead of the trade deadline.
The odds of Williams sticking around with the green-and-white beyond Tuesday are slim. However, Fowler reported that it seems like the Jets want to get through their Week 9 matchup against the Texans before making any deal. Whether a win or loss changes their philosophy is unclear, but teams that need a receiver and want Williams’ services will have to wait a little longer.
Rapoport and Pelissero report that Echols is drawing interest as a low-cost option. There aren’t many cornerbacks seemingly available at the deadline this year, but Echols has been a solid piece for the Jets since arriving as a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft. He’s in the final year of a four-year deal and carries a cap hit just under $1.1 million, according to Spotrac. Echols has been a capable starter and quality depth piece, but the 27-year-old could be hunting for more playing time elsewhere.
After acquiring Adams from the Raiders, Schefter reported that teams around the league began to check in on Wilson. Schefter noted that the Jets do not plan to trade the third-year receiver. While it would be shocking if a deal did come to fruition, Wilson would be one of the Jets’ best trade assets. If the team decides to pull the plug and start over again, they might entertain the idea. Regardless, the former Buckeye should be seen as a building block rather than trade bait.
How the Jets fare against the Texans on “Thursday Night Football” will likely determine whether Williams remains in Florham Park, N.J. The team sits at 2-6 heading into their final game before the trade deadline, and their playoff hopes are hanging on by a thread. After the relationship started with a classic New Jersey-style breakfast sandwich, Williams signed a one-year, $10 million deal to play opposite Garrett Wilson.
It’s been anything but a rocky road since, with Williams being the subject of criticism from Rodgers and buried on the depth chart following the arrival of Adams. An injury to Allen Lazard, which landed him on injured reserve, could change the calculation for “Gang Green” if they still believe the playoffs are a possibility. Williams, however, has felt like a goner for weeks and remains the likeliest player in the Jets locker room to exit by Tuesday.
By all accounts, Reddick is here to stay. Team owner Woody Johnson stepped in to end the league’s longest holdout this year and got the pass-rusher on the field. While a trade is unlikely at best, this situation can change quickly. Reddick famously had no intention of holding out when the Jets traded for him but proceeded to sit out the first seven weeks. Until he gets a contract extension from the Jets, it’s hard to rule out a contender swooping in for some help on the edge if they’re willing to pay the price.
The 2024 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The 2024 NFL trade deadline ends at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Following that time, players cannot be traded until the new league year that begins in March 2025.
