This year’s harvest full moon was a spectacular sight in the sky!
The Sept. 17 full moon not only brought a rare supermoon — where the moon appears brighter and larger in the sky — but the second lunar eclipse of the year.
This was a partial lunar eclipse; according to NASA, the occurrence is “an imperfect alignment of sun, Earth and moon [that] results in the moon passing through only part of Earth’s [shadow]. The shadow grows and then recedes without ever entirely covering the moon.”
Sky gazers can look forward to the next total lunar eclipse, which will take place March 13 through March 14, 2025. But in the meantime, photographers around the world captured stunning photos of the full moon, from China and Australia to the U.S. and beyond.
