Buffalo Bills running back James Cook suffered an injury near the end of the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans in Week 5.

The star running back exited the game after slamming his foot on the ground while jumping for a catch down the sideline. Cook did not play in the game’s final drive.

Cook is off to an outstanding start to the 2024 season. Since Joe Brady took over playcalling, he has been the identity of the Bills offense alongside Josh Allen. He is a clear focal point of the offense, receiving 22 touches in the game against Houston before the injury.

Here’s the latest on the Bills running back’s status:

James Cook did not practice on Thursday or Friday as the Bills list him with foot and toe injuries. During Thursday’s open portion of practice, he was seen working on the side with trainers with a resistance band.

Saturday’s practice ahead of the Bills’ “Monday Night Football” game against the New York Jets will be the deciding session for Cook and other injured Buffalo players.

Head coach Sean McDermott told reporters he was injured during the game against Houston.

Cook’s injury appeared near the end of the fourth quarter when he leaped and attempted to make a catch down the sideline. His left foot slams into the turf, where he could have suffered the toe injury.

The team has not provided further updates on the grade of the possible sprain at this time.

Bills RB depth chart

The Bills have two running backs on the current roster behind Cook. Veteran Ty Johnson and rookie fourth-round pick Ray Davis will be asked to step up if Cook misses time. Davis figures to be the next man up, though Johnson played all three snaps after Cook exited against the Texans.

Johnson is in his seventh season and is likely a more trusted option in pass protection and passing situations. Coming out of Kentucky, Davis was viewed as a three-down back because of his size and ability to run between the tackles.
