Europe’s Alexander Zverev belied apparent illness to fight back and beat Team World’s Frances Tiafoe as the Laver Cup went into a final singles match on Sunday.
Zverev wowed his home fans in Berlin after battling to a 6-7 (5-7) 7-5, (10-5) victory in a match tie-break. On Saturday he had lost to Taylor Fritz and complained of fever.
Team World lead 11-10 but with 13 points needed to win and three points for a victory, it all comes down to Carlos Alcaraz against Fritz in the final singles of the equivalent of golf’s Ryder Cup for men’s tennis.
American Ben Shelton earlier shrugged off losing the doubles and went straight back out to beat Europe’s Daniil Medvedev.
Shelton, who has been the busiest of the players by far over the three days given his double prowess, defeated the Russian 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 (10-7) on a match tie-break. The World led 11-7 at that stage.
Europe’s Alcaraz and Casper Ruud had previously combined to beat Shelton and Tiafoe 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in doubles to cut the World’s lead to 8-7 at the start of the final day of the three-day tournament.
Team Europe are again being captained by Björn Borg and Team World by John McEnroe. Europe won the first three editions but the World have triumphed in the last two.
The tournament, this time taking place in Berlin, switches each year between a venue in Europe and the rest of the world.
