NFL Preview: New England Patriots v New York Jets

Both teams have started the season 1-1 with the Jets losing to the 49ers in week one before bouncing back against the Tennessee Titans in Week Two. The Patriots however won their first game against the Cincinnati Bengals before losing in overtime to the Seattle Seahawks in Week Two. 

The Jets go into the game as the favourites as Aaron Rodgers looks to beat the Patriots for the third time in his career. Rodgers is currently 2-2 in games against the Patriots in his career with his last win over New England coming in 2022.

Team news

New England Patriots

Linebacker Oshane Ximines will miss the game through a knee injury with offensive linemen Vederian Lowe and Sidy Sow also set to miss the game through knee and ankle injuries respectively. 

Patriots linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley has 12 tackles and a sack through two games this season but he is also set to miss out against the Jets as he deals with a shoulder injury. 

O-linemen David Andrews and Mike Onwenu, safety Jabrill Peppers and Defensive End Deatrich Wise Jr. are all questionable. Whilst Anfernee Jennings, Marcus Jones and Layden Tobinson have all worked through injury problems and are expected to play. 

New York Jets

Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson who has four tackles with one for loss, to his name so far this season will miss the game through an Achilles injury. Whilst fellow linebacker CJ Mosley is questionable with a toe injury. 

Michael Carter, DJ Reed and Breece Hall will all play despite being on the injury report earlier in the week.

Rhamondre Stevenson 

The New England Patriots offense runs through Stevenson. The Patriots running back has 201 rush yards through two games with two touchdowns.

Stevenson has 46 rushing attempts across two games so far this season with 117 yards of his 201 coming after contact. The patriots lead back’s longest rush is only 18 yards yet he is averaging 4.4 yards per attempt on the ground. 

Breece hall 

Similarly to Stevenson and the Patriots, the Jets offense runs through Breece Hall

Hall has 207 yards from scrimmage after two games with 116 coming on the ground with Hall also catching 12 of his 14 targets for 91 yards. 

The Jets running back also has a touchdowns a piece on the ground and through the air. 

Of Hall’s 207 yards this season 167 have came after contact. Halls two longest plays of the season came within minutes of each other. He chalked off a 30 yard run which was then followed by a 26 yard touchdown down grab two plays later against the Tennessee Titans

Head to head

The Patriots lead the series 74-55-1 and have won all but one of their last 16 games against the Jets.

The Jets solidarity win of the past nine years came last season when they beat the patriots 17-3 with three Greg Zuerlein field goals and a 50-yard touchdown run from Breece Hall in the fourth quarter.

Prior to this the last time the Jets beat the Patriots without overtime being required was in 2011 when they won 28-21 in Foxborough in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Where and when

The action gets underway at 8:15pm ET on Thursday night in the US, whilst UK fans will have to wait up until the early hours of Friday morning with a later start time of 1:15am.

The game takes place at the New York Jets’ MetLife Stadium.
