Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Detroit Lions: Predictions and latest odds for NFL Week 2

The Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two teams who opened the 2024 NFL season off with wins, will both look to keep rolling as they face off in Week 2 at Ford Field.

The Lions had to dig deep to claim a Week 1 win in a rematch of last year’s playoff thriller with the Los Angeles Rams. After jumping out to a 17-3 lead, Detroit was staring at a deficit with less than five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. However, a Jake Bates field goal in the final seconds forced overtime, and David Montgomery’s one-yard touchdown secured a hard-fought victory.

Things were a bit easier for the Bucs, who rolled to a 37-20 home win over the Washington Commanders. Baker Mayfield went 24-for-30, throwing four touchdown passes (including two to wide receiver Mike Evans). If anything, a late Washington touchdown made that game look closer than it really was, giving Tampa Bay reason to hope it can compete with one of the NFC’s best teams this weekend.

USA TODAY: Lions 24, Buccaneers 14

Lorenzo Reyes writes: “Detroit is coming off an emotional, overtime victory, but the Lions have had success against Tampa Bay recently. The two teams played twice last year — including a divisional round playoff game — and Detroit won by 14 and eight points, respectively. Detroit is the more physical team.”

Bleacher Report: Lions 31, Buccaneers 23

Vince Michelino writes: “For me, the Lions are the class of the NFC and only getting better. Their defense is improved and their dominant offensive line enables Campbell’s signature ground-and-pound style that should grant them the advantage in time of possession. And don’t forget about the long-awaited arrival of Jameson Williams to go along with Amon-Ra St. Brown if this becomes a shootout (as indicated by the total). The Lions won by eight points last time, and having home-field advantage here gives me confidence they’ll do it again.”

CBS Sports: Lions 30, Buccaneers 27

Pete Prisco writes: “This is a rematch of the playoff game from last season won by the Lions. The Bucs played it close in that game, but this is a tough task with a banged-up secondary. Even so, look for Baker Mayfield to again keep them in it. The Lions will win a close one.”

Sports Illustrated: Lions 31, Buccaneers 27

Peter Dewey writes: “Tampa Bay’s offense has the playmakers to keep up with anyone when Mayfield has it going, and it’s worth noting that the Bucs were 7-2 against the spread as road underdogs in the 2023 season. I am not totally sure that they’ll pull off the upset, but I do think the Bucs keep this game within a touchdown.”
