The United States men’s basketball team hasn’t been in danger of losing so far in these Olympics but has covered the point spread only once in its three victories. There’s another large spread posted on odds boards for the USA’s quarterfinal against Brazil on Tuesday (3:15 p.m. ET, USA).
In their group stage finale, the Americans trailed Puerto Rico for almost all of the first quarter before eliminating any doubt over the outcome with a 39-16 second-quarter edge. Team USA won by a final tally of 104-83 and outscored their Group C opposition by a tournament-best 64 points.
Brazil provides the next obstacle for Team USA in its quest for a fifth straight gold medal. Brazil was the top third-place team to reach the knockout stage, outscored by seven points and finishing with a 1-2 record in Group B to reach the knockout rounds.
The original Dream Team hammered Brazil 127-83 in a game in which Charles Barkley scored 30 points against a team led by the legendary Oscar Schmidt, and the countries last met on the basketball court in the 1996 quarterfinals in Atlanta, just as they’re about to in Paris. Team USA won that game, 98-77.

The win over Puerto Rico didn’t feature Jrue Holiday, who sat after spraining an ankle against South Sudan. He’s expected to play against Brazil and will likely start.
Anthony Edwards scored a team-high 26 points on 11-for-15 shooting to help fuel the comeback following the slow start. Kevin Durant had his lowest-scoring game with 11 points but is 10-for-14 from 3-point range in the Olympics.
Stephen Curry followed up a poor shooting game against South Sudan with just eight points, finishing 2-for-6 from 3-point range. We’re still waiting for a breakout from him. Devin Booker was excellent in the opener but shot just 3-for-9 against the Boricuas. Jayson Tatum has started the past two contests and registered a double-double on Saturday, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a team-high 23 minutes.
Team USA averaged 105.7 points in their three wins in Lille while surrendering 84.3. The squad averaged 96.4 through its five exhibitions, surrendering 86.2. Puerto Rico got off to a hot start, so look for improved defense and intensity out of the gate to be a driving force
Brazil defeated Japan convincingly and lost to Germany and Australia by double-digits to reach this stage. It has finished 13th in the last two FIBA World Cups and hasn’t finished higher than fourth at the Olympics since 1968.
The Brazilians lost 78-66 to host France in the opener but led 23-15 after a quarter before being outscored 42-22 over the next 20 minutes.
Top forward Bruno Caboclo was held scoreless over 11 minutes due to foul trouble but put together a 33-point game against Japan. Veteran forward Leo Meindl has been consistent on the wing, Cristiano Felicio, who like Caboclo, played a few years in the NBA, is Brazil’s top big man. 41-year-old Marcelo Huertas, who played for the Lakers in two seasons, runs the point, backed up by another veteran in Raul Neto.
Team USA coach Steve Kerr is very familiar with young wing Gui Santos, who impressed the Warriors enough last season to land a contract. Forwards Maozinha and Didi Louzada have also gotten NBA looks over the past few years.
Brazil is deep and has a few streaky shooters but lacks a go-to scorer like Jokic or Giannis Antetokounmpo to trifle the U.S. defense.
The Brazilians have averaged 80.3 points while surrendering 82.3 this tournament.

Defense needs to be the calling card for Team USA going forward. They have had some solid stretches on that end but have yet to stifle an opponent. Don’t be surprised to see that stage of improvement begin here.
With Holiday back, Joel Embiid likely to sit if he continues offering less than Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo in protecting the rim, and the competition intensifying, the U.S. should ramp things up defensively. Expect the Americans to advance in convincing fashion in a game that comes UNDER the posted total.
