The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup saw India ending their prolonged trophy drought as they lifted an ICC title after 11 long years. The latest edition of the T20 World Cup was jointly conducted by the USA and the West Indies.
ICC has been rocked by a massive setback as two senior officials submitted their resignations following the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Head of Events Chris Tetley and General Manager of Marketing & Communication Claire Furlong decided to step down from their positions.
The development came just a week ahead of ICC’s annual conference in Colombo and the reason behind their departure is reportedly the chaotic conduction of the T20 World Cup. As per a News18 report, expenses skyrocketed during the USA leg of the tournament and an investigation is expected to be launched to grind out the real reason behind this.
As per the same report, Pankaj Khimji, Associate Member Director wanted to have an audit of the expenses and also conveyed his thoughts through a letter to all the members. A source told News18, “Mr Khimji wrote a letter to all the members and highlighted the conduct and expenses during the USA leg of the T20 World Cup. A lot of action around this was expected during the ICC meeting in Sri Lanka later this month but the resignations have already started coming in.”
ICC were hoping to recover some of the costs by inflating the ticket prices but that wasn’t the case and they had to bear heavy losses in the USA. Interestingly, this is the first time that such a major tournament was conducted on US soil.
A senior USA cricket official told News18, “Money was being spent left, right and centre without any vision. They were spending thousands of dollars on activations at a single site and failed to attract encouraging responses. There was no planning whatsoever. Few individuals chose to spend money the way they wished to.
“From where did Brett Jones come? He recently moved to the USA from Australia and was appointed CEO of a firm responsible for delivery in the USA. He is very close to Chris Tetley and no wonder he got a high position.”
ICC’s annual conference which will take place from July 19 to 22 in the Sri Lankan capital is likely to discuss on the chaotic arrangement of the T20 World Cup.
