The Americans have had a stranglehold on the most gold medals in six of the last seven Summer Games. China, which hosted the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, won the most gold medals that year.

Starting the 2024 Summer Games, the U.S. led all countries with 1,070 gold medals in the history of the Summer Olympics. The Americans had won most of those (344) in the broad category of athletics. That includes track and field events, road running and race walking.

Entering the 2024 Paris games, Nielsen’s Gracenote Sports’ Virtual Medal Table forecasted a tight race for most gold medals between the U.S. (37) and China (36).

Bet365’s odds on countries to win most medals at Paris Olympics

Here are the countries that rank as top contenders to win the most overall medals in Paris based on Bet365’s odds.

  • USA -10000
  • China +2200
  • Japan +15000
  • Australia +15000
  • Great Britain +20000
  • France +20000
  • Australia +12500
  • Italy +20000
  • Germany +40000

The United States has captured the most overall medals in the last seven Summer Olympics. Overall, the U.S. has collected 2,655 medals, the most of any country in the history of the Summer Games entering Paris.

Nielsen’s Gracenote Sports projected the Americans to win the most overall medals in Paris at 123. That would be 10 more than the U.S. won during the 2020 Tokyo Games, which were held in 2021 due to the pandemic.

All of this explains the rather prohibitive odds being offered at Bet365.

There’s an interesting subplot at work, as American athletes (for the first time) will receive $37,500 for each gold medal they win from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (silver medals will bring home $22,500, and bronze medals $1,500).

Getting back to this bet, here are the gold medal totals for the U.S. in the last five Summer Olympics.

  • 2020 Tokyo (39)
  • 2016 Rio de Janeiro (46)
  • 2012 London (48)
  • 2008 Beijing (36)
  • 2004 Athens (36)

Curious about the year America took home its most gold medals in the Summer Olympics? That was the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, when 14 Eastern Bloc countries including the Soviet Union boycotted the Games, and the U.S. took home 83 gold medals.
